Laura Campisi - Strange Fruit

The topics of #racism, #whitepriviledge and #whitesupremacy are ones that always made my heart bleed, but never like last year I realized the magnitude and depth of this problem in the US, the country I love and chose as my home. I'll admit that as a perosn born and raised in Italy, at first I struggled understanding the Black Lives Matter movement, not because I didn't see the validity of it but because I grew up in a system of all whites where discrimination was mostly the one of norther Italians against us people from the South. I'll admit that it took me some time to better understand American society and the heartbreaking, rampant #systemicracism it's pervaded by. I had a naive view of the United States, I was ignorant and simply didn't know any better. But I see now, crystal clear, and I'm ashamed of the misunderstanding of my past when "all lives matter" used to make sense to me. Sure, all lives matter. But NO LIVES MATTER until we can all unite and proclaim as one that BLACK LIVES MATTER! I hope I can make amends for my foolishness of the past by fighting #colorblindness with all I have. This video is a fisrt step, an attempt to hopefully help others realize what these words mean, and that in order to keep growing as a country we need to face the truth, own it and from there work as hard as we can to make things right. Rosa Canta e Cunta - Rosa Balistreri (by Laura Campisi & Marko Bonarius - Palermo, Sicily)

The song Rosa Canta e Cunta (of famous popular Sicilian singer Rosa Balistreri, 1927-1990) interpreted by a Palermitan singer, Laura Campisi and a Dutch double bass player, Marko Bonarius with beautiful images of Palermo (Trattoria Da Zia Pina - NOT TO MISS WHEN IN PALERMO! - and the Vucciria & Ballaro markets), Sicily by French videomaker Dorine Brun. I came into this world when the prepotent Felt disgusted in the streets A time of abuses, hunger and war I grew up in between the wretched Silent tears I cried and many My innocence was shared amongst many The bad people, the powerful Who are in many in this society It's not love which grows near them But the favours distributed by those who rule I open my fists, count my fingers...
