Laura Campisi - Strange Fruit

The topics of #racism, #whitepriviledge and #whitesupremacy are ones that always made my heart bleed, but never like last year I realized the magnitude and depth of this problem in the US, the country I love and chose as my home. I'll admit that as a perosn born and raised in Italy, at first I struggled understanding the Black Lives Matter movement, not because I didn't see the validity of it but because I grew up in a system of all whites where discrimination was mostly the one of norther Italians against us people from the South. I'll admit that it took me some time to better understand American society and the heartbreaking, rampant #systemicracism it's pervaded by. I had a naive view of the United States, I was ignorant and simply didn't know any better. But I see now, crystal clear, and I'm ashamed of the misunderstanding of my past when "all lives matter" used to make sense to me. Sure, all lives matter. But NO LIVES MATTER until we can all unite and proclaim as one that BLACK LIVES MATTER! I hope I can make amends for my foolishness of the past by fighting #colorblindness with all I have. This video is a fisrt step, an attempt to hopefully help others realize what these words mean, and that in order to keep growing as a country we need to face the truth, own it and from there work as hard as we can to make things right. Written and performed by Laura Campisi feat. Emilio D. Miler (background percussions) From "Double Mirror" (2017): https://www.lauracampisi.com MORNINGSIDE (Music and lyrics by Laura Campisi) I’m gonna go down on Morningside I’m gonna go looking for your starry eyes When the blossoms still are all so white I’m gonna look for you on Morningside The breeze is chilly but not that cold And I can’t stop thinkin’ you might come back home I’ll look for you on Morningside And maybe I’ll forget why you can’t be mine Bloom and snow are just the same They go with the flow of a windy day And maybe it’s a shame but I can’t see why You think I’m to blame if I keep on tryin’ Tryin’ to keep us in a lovely spot While you turn your back and decree we’re done But if I can’t find you on Morningside I’ll find someone better, kiss you goodbye I’ll look for you on Morningside But I can’t forget why you can’t be mine No I can’t forget why you can’t be mine I can’t forget you won’t be mine

Laura Campisi Sicily Revisited - Facci Di Luna (Italian American Museum, NYC, 6/1/14)

This is an original composition by my uncle, Pasquale Campisi, on Sicilian traditional lyrics collected by Corrado Avolio in the mid of the XIX Century. "Facci di luna" ("Moon Face") is a simple but powerful piece on the true meaning of love, and my uncle composed it as a gift to my mother and father's wedding. The introduction to the song is an original translation in Sicilian language to Poem #5 by Latin poet Catullus. I worked on the translation together with my mother, Luisa, long time ago. This video is dedicated to my mother and father, and to my whole family. But most of all, this is for you, Zio Pasquale. I will always love you, wherever you are. From "Sicily Revisited", a show by Laura Campisi. Recorded live at the Italian American Museum (Little Italy, New York) on June 1st, 2014. Featuring Alberto Fidone on doublebass.

Rosa Canta e Cunta - Rosa Balistreri (by Laura Campisi & Marko Bonarius - Palermo, Sicily)

The song Rosa Canta e Cunta (of famous popular Sicilian singer Rosa Balistreri, 1927-1990) interpreted by a Palermitan singer, Laura Campisi and a Dutch double bass player, Marko Bonarius with beautiful images of Palermo (Trattoria Da Zia Pina - NOT TO MISS WHEN IN PALERMO! - and the Vucciria & Ballaro markets), Sicily by French videomaker Dorine Brun. Video: © 2007 Dorine Brun Scroll down for translations in English, Italian and French. contacts: markobonarius@gmail.com dorinebrun@gmail.com ROSA SINGS AND TELLS by Rosa Balistreri (english translation) Tonight I'll go and ride with the wind To open the doors of history Tonight I want to give life, for a moment, To the past and memory Tonight with the fire of love I'll dig a grave to sorrow There's more sorrow, there's more torment Than joy and love for mankind It is not tears that can change destiny It is not fear that can stop the way I open my fists, count my fingers I remain myself, live my life I sing and I tell To not get lost Nobody blessed my path Not even the small hand of a priest And still I go as the wind In search for a moment of peace I want to break... to break the skies To make it rain love There's those who deceive you There's those who commands And those who rests in silence It's power that reinforces those in power It's silence that kills the innocent I open my fists, count my fingers... I came into this world when the prepotent Felt disgusted in the streets A time of abuses, hunger and war I grew up in between the wretched Silent tears I cried and many My innocence was shared amongst many The bad people, the powerful Who are in many in this society It's not love which grows near them But the favours distributed by those who rule I open my fists, count my fingers...
